While addressing party supporters at the grand finale of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial campaign rally
in Benin City yesterday, President Muhammadu Buhari assured Nigerians
that the nation would soon get out of recession and become great again.
Buhari said, “We are a nation of great human and natural resources,
especially the youth. Please, sit down and reflect and remember what I
said 30 years ago. We have no other nation like Nigeria. We must all
remain and salvage it together.
“I assure you we are going to get out of our economic doldrums. We
are almost out of our insecurity problems and we are going to make
Nigeria great again. We are going to be very proud of our country once
again and our resources will not be for nothing” the President added.
30 years ago, the then Military Head of State embarked on a series of
reforms to rebuild the nation’s socio-political and economic systems,
along the realities of Nigeria’s austere economic conditions. The
rebuilding included removing or cutting back the excesses in national
expenditure, obliterating or removing completely, corruption from the
nation’s social ethics, shifting from mainly public sector employment to
self-employment. Buhari also encouraged import substitution
industrialisation based to a great extent on the use of local materials
and he tightened importation.
However, Buhari’s bid to re-balance public finances by curbing imports led to many job losses and the closure of businesses.
